Scioto Drops Game To Cross Town Rival Jerome, 7-4

April 20, 2019

Friday, April 20th / East Dublin ~ Scioto committed 7 errors on the night en route to gift wrapping the game and handing it to cross town Rival Dublin Jerome, dropping their third straight game by a final score of 7-4, lowering their record to 7-6.  Offensively, Scioto was able to string together some hits and scored runs in 4 of the 7 innings, and had base runners in every inning.  But they couldn’t get the big hit they needed, leaving 11 runners on base, 6 of them in scoring position.

Madison Heasley pitched another solid outing, pitching well enough to win, despite getting drilled on the knee cap with a line drive in the second inning that dropped her to the ground.  After a few tense moments, she got up and went back to work and completed the game.  She pitched a complete game and allowed only 1 earned run on 9 hits.  She allowed 3 walks, to the same hitter, who did not score any of the times she was on base.  The loss evens her record at 5-5.

Scioto scored lone runs in 4 innings, aided by some errors on Jerome’s defense.  Junior transfer Haley Gibson made her long awaited debut and got on base three times, she scored Scioto’s first run in the second inning.  With two outs, she drew a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a single by Makayla Jauregui and scored on a base hit through the left side by Gretchen Baker.  This made the score 2-1 Jerome.  After giving up a run in the top of the 4th, Scioto came right back in the bottom of the inning.  Makayla Jauregui laced her second of three hits to right field, went to 2nd on a groundout, and scored on an error by the Celtic first baseman.

Jerome scored a run in the top of the 5th and the Irish responded yet again.  Lauren Erickson led off the Scioto half of the inning with an infield single to the hole, the third of her 4-hit night.  She stole 2nd and moved to third when Heasley hit a line drive of the Jerome pitcher, and scored on a beautiful sac bunt from Emily Dinan.  This closed the score to 4-3.  The Celts put a pair of unearned runs on the board in the 6th and that proved to be the back breaker, as Scioto was only able to respond with another single run.  With 1 out Baker wound up on second base when the Celts third baseman threw the ball out of play.  She went to third on a groundout and scored when the Jerome pitcher could not handle a ground ball right back at her.  This capped Scioto’s scoring, Jerome would add a single insurance run in the top of the 7th making the final 7-4.

Scioto has the weekend off after going 0-3 this week, and will have some time to try and figure things out defensively before the big week ahead playing 6 games.  Scioto stays in conference play on Monday, they travel to Hilliard Darby for a 5:15 start, as they begin the second half of the league schedule.
