Irish Dominate Wolves, Sweep Battle of Hard Road – Scioto Softball

Irish Dominate Wolves, Sweep Battle of Hard Road

April 24, 2019

Wednesday, April 24th/ West Worthington, somewhere down Hard Road ~ The Scioto bats finally woke up in a big way Wednesday night as they scored a run in every inning and then exploded for 7 runs in the top of the 5th snapping their losing skid.  After scoring single runs in the first three innings, Coach Stamets asked the team for more than a single run.  They obliged with 2.  Heading out to the top of the 5th, Coach Ott urged the girls to put the game away, which they did, batting around and plating 7 runs putting the rivalry game against Kilbourne away by a score of 12-2.

Maddy Baughman and Madi Comstock led the offense each collecting 3 hits.  Every player in the Scioto starting lineup scored a run with the exception of Lauren Erickson who was stranded on second and third, and doubled, driving in a run.

The defensive highlight of the evening was the triple play turned in by the Irish in the 4th inning.  The Wolves loaded the bases and then scored when a hit batter forced in their second run on the night.  With the score a precarious 5-2 and the bases still loaded with no outs, the Wolves leadoff hitter stepped to the plate.  After having walked already twice on the night and working the count in her favor 3-1, Coach Ott urged Sarah Booth to just throw a strike down the middle to have her put the ball in play.  She did, in the form of a line shot at third baseman Emily Dinan who after snagging the drive, calmly stepped on third, and then threw across the diamond to Lucia Adams to complete the rare triple feat!  Dinan had her choice of throws as the runner from second had strayed well off the base as well, and the Irish could have had 4 outs!

Scioto got on the board first in the top of the 1st when Baughman led off with a slap single on which she beat out the throw hustling down the line, and scored on a double to the gap off the bat of Erickson.  In the 2nd Scioto took advantage of a Wolves error, Dinan was safe when the third baseman could not come up with her hot grounder, and when she did she threw off line.  Dinan later scored on a productive ground out to the back side by Lacey Henry.  In the Makayla Jauregui singled to center, moved to 3rd on an error and scored on a passed ball.

Lauren Perry started a 2 out rally in the 4th, following up a foul ball of her toe with a screaming double to right.  Baughman hit a hard shot over the drawn in outfield and traded places with Perry.  Comstock grounded a shot up the middle and Baughman scored when the center fielder bobbled the ball.  The 5th inning saw the Irish bat around scoring 7 runs powered by singles from Dinan, Baughman and Comstock, Booth was hit by a pitch (ok, we get it, don’t pitch her inside), another bunt single by Adams, and 3 fielding errors by the Wolves.  Rylee Spain scored a run in her first varsity action; courtesy running for Booth she sprinted home on a passed ball to the short back stop and touched home with a textbook slide!  Yes, she really did slide and it was a thing of beauty!

Booth had an outstanding effort on the mound, only allowing only a single earned run on 3 hits, and worked her way around 5 walks leaving Wolves on the bases every inning.  She struck out 1 on the complete game victory, her 3rd on the year.

Scioto stays in Cardinal League play and against another Worthington foe Thursday night when they host the Cardinals of Thomas Worthington.  This will be Senior Night as we celebrate the careers of seniors co-Caption Emily Dinan and pitcher Haley Gibson.  Festivities will start a little earlier than normal with a ceremonial first pitch, and senior bios.  First pitch schedule for 5:15.  Feel free to stay afterward and share in cake and general shenanigans.
