Early Lead and Late Heroics: Scioto Edges Out Big Walnut 11-10

April 25, 2024

April 24, 2024 – Dublin Scioto High School:  In a thrilling matchup on Wednesday, the game started slow. The Golden Eagles of Big Walnut only managed to get a runner onboard on an Irish error.

Scioto’s offensive onslaught began in the first inning when Faith Kinzer hit a single that drove in a run. The momentum continued in the second inning, where Dublin unleashed a barrage of six hits that translated into eight runs. This rally featured singles by Gina Wasko, Kinzer, Lexie Richie, and Maria Wasko, along with a double from Sophia Jackson that brought in three runs.

Scioto established an early 9-run lead in the second inning and narrowly secured an 11-10 victory over Big Walnut. Despite being down 9 runs, the Eagles fought back valiantly, scoring consistently with eight singles and a triple.

The game was marked by strong performances at the plate from both teams. Scioto collected 12 hits, while Big Walnut managed 10 in this high-scoring game.

Big Walnut had the big inning in the fourth, rallying with seven hits to score seven runs and snatch a 10-9 lead. Ava Thornhill’s single was crucial, driving in two runs during this surge.

Dublin reclaimed the lead later in the same inning, with Hahni Miller’s double making it 11-10.

Lexie Richie pitched for Dublin and secured the win, allowing 10 hits and 10 runs (seven earned) over seven innings, along with nine strikeouts and four walks.

On the opposing side, Reza Benson suffered the loss, giving up 11 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits across four innings, with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Irish bats, which had gone silent at Delaware Hayes high school, got red-hot again on Wednesday as they amassed a season-leading number of hits. Jackson was particularly effective, driving in three runs from the seventh spot. Kinzer and the Waskos each notched two hits, contributing to the team’s total.

On the bases, Scioto was aggressive, accumulating five stolen bases, with Kinzer and Sandra Phrakornkham each stealing multiple bases.

The Big Walnut JV squad had a strong game against our Junior Varsity team, taking home a 13-1 victory last night. Sophie Bird went 1-3 and Katy Joseph was 2-3 at the plate for the Irish.

Looking ahead, Dublin will face the Westerville North Warriors in another big matchup on Thursday.

So come on out to cheer the teams on!

Go Irish!
