May 1, 2024 – Dublin Scioto High School: In a commanding display at Dublin Scioto High School on a very warm spring evening, the Scioto softball team cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Worthington Kilbourne Wolves on Wednesday.
Sandra Phrakornkham was the star of the show, collecting three hits in four at-bats, including an inside-the-park home run, a triple, and a double, significantly boosting Dublin’s offense.
The game started strong for Dublin in the first inning when Phrakornkham sprinted for an inside-the-park home run followed by Maria Wasko, who also drove in a run with a single. The Irish capitalized further in the second inning, extending their lead with runs batted in by Faith Kinzer and an error by the Wolves.
Kinzer was not only effective with the bat, gathering two hits, but also showcased her speed by stealing two bases as part of the team’s total of five steals for the game. Shockingly, Kinzer was hit by two pitches.
On the mound, hurler Lexie Richie delivered an outstanding performance, striking out 15 batters and allowing just one run on five hits across seven innings, demonstrating why she is one of the top pitchers in the Ohio Capital Conference! The team is now 9-5 in the conference.
Her dominance was complemented by strong batting performances, notably by Richie and Wasko, who each drove in two runs, proving to be a formidable duo in the lineup.
On the opposing side, Addie Ruffing shouldered the loss for Worthington Kilbourne, enduring six innings on the mound and surrendering seven runs on nine hits. Scarlett Elder tried to spark a rally for the Wolves, going 2-for-3 and contributing an RBI, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Dublin’s lead.
The JV team had a tough outing against the Upper Arlington Golden Bears. They lost 12-2 but most of the damage was done in the first inning, when they racked up 9 runs. The Scioto JV settled down and only gave up a few more runs. Makaylee Horiba started in the circle for the squad. She gave up 10 hits but only 3 earned runs over five innings and she struck out 7 batters! Sophie Bird, Katy Joseph, Ella Sawin, Fatma Abukar, Callie Akina, and Emma Gamez each had a hit for the JV. And Abukar stole two bases.
As Scioto prepares for their next challenge against the Groveport-Madison Cruisers on Thursday, they carry momentum from a well-rounded game characterized by aggressive baserunning, amazing hitting, and stellar pitching.
