Game CommentaryVarsityScioto Drops Both Ends Of The Triad

May 5, 2019

Saturday, May 5th / Really Far West Dublin ~ The Irish had a rough week, dropping 3 games by a combined score of 45-5.  They didn’t hit, they couldn’t field, and the pitching was less than stellar.  Saturday, the team turned a page.  In the two games they combined for 19 hits, scored double digits in 1 of the games, and played error free ball in the other game.  So yes, they lost both games to their cross town rivals, but they weren’t terrible losses.  They gave a glimmer of hope for the Sectional Tournament.

The Celtics of Jerome scored first in game 1 of the day, manufacturing a run in the 2nd inning with a leadoff walk, sac bunt and a single to take a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 3rd, with 2 outs, they rallied for a pair with a double, two walks and a single to expand their lead to 3.  Scioto responded with a pair of their own in the top of the 4th.  Madison Heasley drove in Scioto’s first run in the form of Lauren Erickson who had walked and worked her way around the bases on a groundout and a wild pitch.  Gretchen Baker trotted home on a single to right off the bat of Emily Dinan pulling Scioto to within 1.

That’s where the scoring stood until the top of the 7th.  With the game one the line Scioto was able to squeeze across the tying run.  Makayla Jauregui led off with a double and scored on Erickson’s 2-out hit to center.  Scioto loaded the bases and looked like they were in real business with an infield single by Maddy Baughman and Sarah Booth was safe on an error.  But they could garner no more offense and left all three runners stranded.  In the bottom of the inning the Celtic leadoff hitter rocked a shot to the fence for a leadoff double.  With a couple of intentional walks to load the bases, the Celts were able to deliver a slow roller up the middle through the drawn in infield to score the game’s final run. Winning 4-3.

Heasley started and took the complete game loss.  She had the offensive numbers to back her up, but just not the key hit as Scioto stranded 8 bases runners.  Heasley surrendered 4 runs and 8 hits, and 6 walks; she struck out 6 and stranded 11 base runners.

The second game was a back and forth high scoring affair but Scioto just couldn’t get over the hump to take the lead or break it open.  Every time Coffman scored, Scioto came right back, but ended up just on the short side.  Coffman opened with 4 runs in the first 3 innings, Scioto answered with 2.  In the 4th, the Rocks put up 2 and the Irish came back with 3.  In the 5th & 6th, it was Coffman 2 & 5, and Scioto 1 & 4.  After surrendering 3 runs in the first, it was just uphill all afternoon, and Scioto just didn’t have the legs for it.

Erickson, Heasley and Jauregui continued their hot hitting all chipping in 2 hits apiece.  Imani McCullough added a hit of her own and she and Erickson each drive in 2 runs, with Heasley and Jauregui each adding an RBI.  Hayley Cole broke out of her slump with two hits of her own as well as an RBI.  Dinan had the other hit for the Irish.  Jauregui scored 3 times, once when the catcher tried to pick-back at third and threw the ball into the outfield.  She was hit by a pitch also.

Booth started in game 2 and battled her way out of jams in numerous innings.  Leaving the bases loaded in three innings.  She pitched 6 innings before yielding to Heasley, who pitched the final frame.  3 of the runs were unearned, and the two combined for 3 strikeouts.

Monday night, the Irish start the playoffs, hosting the Wildcats of Hilliard Davidson in the Sectional Semifinal game.  The game is scheduled for 5:00 at Irish Field.
