Near-Perfect Night: Reynolds Leads Scioto Past Briggs in Tournament Opener

May 20, 20260

Dublin Scioto High School, May 19, 2026:  Under warm sunshine and clear evening skies, tournament softball officially arrived at the Scioto field Tuesday night—and the Irish wasted no time making a statement.

From the very first inning, Scioto played with the urgency and sharpness of a team that knows every game now matters a little more.

And in the circle, Avery Reynolds was nearly untouchable.

The right-hander dominated from start to finish, striking out 14 of the 15 batters she faced while throwing just 54 pitches across five innings. She opened 13 of those 15 at-bats with a strike, attacked relentlessly, and never allowed Briggs to settle into the game.

In fact, Reynolds had something even bigger unfolding.

No hits. No walks. No errors. No baserunners.

A perfect game.

The only thing that stopped it from becoming official was the mercy rule, which ended the game before the full seven innings could be completed. Still, it was a phenomenal performance—one of the most dominant outings of the season—highlighted by an immaculate third inning where she struck out the side on nine pitches.

Meanwhile, the offense gave her plenty of support.

Scioto erupted in the opening inning, piling up extra-base hits almost immediately. Lyla Magnussen got things started with an RBI double before Reynolds added one of her own. Gigi Rodriguez followed with a two-run double, and Katy Joseph kept the rally rolling as the Irish stormed out to an early lead.

The second inning brought even more fireworks.

Abbi Clark and Rodriguez each drove in runs before Yonit Rodriguez electrified the crowd with an inside-the-park home run, racing around the bases as Scioto continued to pour it on.

By the middle innings, the outcome was no longer in doubt.

Scioto finished with 17 hits, played flawless defense behind Reynolds, and controlled every aspect of the game from the first pitch onward. Gina Wasko and Joseph each collected three hits, while Rodriguez led the team with four RBIs in a balanced offensive attack.

On a perfect spring evening and the opening night of tournament play, Scioto delivered exactly the kind of performance it hoped to carry into the postseason—rolling past Briggs 16–0 behind Reynolds’ near-perfect masterpiece. And it was the final home game for our seniors.

Next up: The road only gets tougher from here. Scioto advances to a tournament rematch with Big Walnut—a team that has already beaten the Irish twice this season. With postseason stakes now attached, the third meeting promises to be one of the most anticipated games of the year as Scioto looks for revenge.
