Westerville South Wildcats Battle to Very End Against the Irish

April 20, 20231

April 19, 2023 – Westerville South High School: It was a recipe for disaster for the Irish:

  • Bottom of the 7th
  • Dublin is on the field
  • Westerville South is at bat, only down 2 runs
  • There are no outs
  • And the Wildcats have loaded the bases….

Scioto started the game strong, scoring on a home run by Bella Jauregui in the first. Taylor Henry had a single in the inning, followed by a triple from Leah Matter. A single by Jauregui in the second inning, and a stolen base by Sandra Phrakornkham, kept things going.

But the Westerville South Wildcats would not give up easily. They scored four runs in the first inning as well.  Their offense in the first was led by Mays, Smith, and Stoever, all driving in runs in the frame.

In the bottom of that first inning, South tied things up at four with Stoever’s double on a 3-2 count, which scored two runs.

The Irish pulled back away with two runs in the second inning, regaining the lead.  Jauregui’s single on a 2-0 count, scored one run and Lexie Richie lined out but drove in another.

Taylor Henry was in the pitcher’s circle for Scioto. She allowed nine hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out eight.

Paul led things off on the rubber for the Wildcats. She lasted seven innings, allowing ten hits and seven runs while striking out eight.

The Irish win a tough battle against a determined Westerville South team 7-5!

But that final inning had every Dublin fan pacing, shouting, or holding their breath — “bases loaded with no outs” rarely ends well for the defense. But two strikeouts and a pop-up got them out of a tight jam.

The Irish tallied ten hits in the game.  Henry, Jauregui, and Faith Kinzer all collected multiple hits for Scioto, with two each for the win. And Faith Kinzer had a sliding catch in the outfield, late in the game, that had the crowd on their feet!

Westerville South totaled nine hits.  Smith, Stoever, and James each managed multiple hits for Westerville South.

Senior Night is Thursday – come out to the field early for the announcements and to thank your seniors!

Go Irish!
