Central Pickerington High School, Saturday, May 31, 2025: It was a tough end to a magical postseason journey for the Irish, as Scioto fell 11-0 to a red-hot Mount Vernon (26-2) squad in the Regional Championship on Saturday monring at Pickerington Central.
From the first pitch, the Yellow Jackets came out with something to prove. They struck early in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on an Irish miscue and a textbook sacrifice bunt from Brooke Dovenbarger to plate two. One inning later, Keely Pollard sent a no-doubter over the left-field fence, a solo shot that echoed through the stadium and made it 3-0 Mount Vernon.
The Yellow Jackets kept the pressure on in the third, stacking up runs with small ball and well-placed hits. A sacrifice bunt by Jocelyn Scarbury, another Scioto error, and a line drive single to center from Presli Pope widened the gap.
For Scioto, it was simply a case of running into a buzzsaw. Mount Vernon’s ace, Scarbury, was untouchable—throwing a five-inning no-hitter, racking up 10 strikeouts while allowing just one walk. Alexis Richie started for the Irish and tallied two strikeouts in the opening frame, while Avery Reynolds came on in relief and battled through three and two-thirds innings, striking out six of her own.
Mount Vernon tallied 10 hits, with Pollard leading the charge with three RBIs and a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Dovenbarger and Myers also added multi-hit performances, while the defense behind them played flawless softball, committing zero errors and snagging four stolen bases for good measure.
While the loss stings, this Scioto squad leaves the field with heads held high. The Irish finish as Regional Runners-up—the farthest any team in Scioto softball history has gone in three decades. This 2025 team didn’t just make history—they built it!
