Dublin Triad Troubles: Scioto Falls to Jerome and Coffman in Doubleheader

May 5, 20240

May 4, 2024 – Dublin Coffman High School: In the annual Dublin Triad hosted at Coffman High School, the Scioto Irish faced off against their heated rivals in a tough doubleheader that tested their resilience and skill. Despite strong starts in both games, the Irish fell short, losing first to Jerome and then to Coffman.

Game 1: Scioto vs. Jerome
The day began with a challenging matchup against Jerome, where the Irish were defeated 8-3.

Scioto opened the scoring in the first inning when Lexie Richie hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run. However, Jerome quickly responded, tying the game at one apiece in the bottom of the first through Delayney Stoner’s groundout.

Scioto briefly regained the lead in the top of the second inning after Gina Wasko executed another sacrifice fly, making it 2-1. Jerome answered back in the lower half of the same inning, capitalizing on an Irish error and a single by Stoner, each driving in a run to go ahead 3-2.

Then the clouds let loose, finally delivering on the promise of rain that had been threatening all day. Everyone ran for shelter as the game was halted until the storm system passed through. Unfortunately, the delay kept the Irish from getting back on track.

Post-delay, Jerome extended their lead and ultimately secured the win. Riley Schaner pitched three and two-thirds innings of relief for Jerome, allowing zero runs on three hits.

Lexie Richie absorbed the loss for Scioto. The right-handed hurley went six innings, surrendering eight runs (three earned) on 10 hits, striking out four and walking two.

Lilly Niehaus and Delayney Stoner were pivotal for Jerome, with Niehaus picking up three hits and Stoner driving in three runs. Sandra Phrakornkham stood out for Scioto with two hits.

Game 2: Scioto vs. Coffman
The second game proved to be a nail-biter, ending in a 5-4 loss for Scioto. The Irish initially took a commanding 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Lexie Richie, Lyla Magnussen, and Sophia Jackson each contributed RBIs, with Magnussen’s double bringing in two runs. However, Coffman rallied back, tying the game in the sixth inning off a single by Camryn Newland and an error.

The game was decided in the bottom of the seventh when Nicole Shafer’s fielder’s choice allowed the winning run to score. Sarah Cady earned the win for Coffman by pitching three hitless and scoreless innings. Once again, Richie took the loss for Scioto, completing the game with six and one-third innings pitched, five runs allowed (two earned), and six strikeouts.

Magnussen was a key player for Scioto, driving in two runs, while teammates Kinzer and Richie each collected a hit. Lizzie Foreman and Myla Foust led Coffman with two hits each.

Despite the rain, it seemed like a lot of money was raised for all the cancer charities, which is awesome and can hopefully do a lot of good! Thank you to all who participated and helped bring in donations!

As the playoffs approach, Scioto looks to rebound against Hilliard Davidson at home this Tuesday. Everyone is encouraged to come out and cheer on the Irish as they aim for a victory in their playoff opener.

Go Irish!
