Tuesday, April 30th/ East Dublin ~ Tuesday night saw Scioto’s last regular season single home game, a tribute to their seniors and a head nod and small floral gesture to the three Thomas Worthington seniors as well. The night also witnessed another big win at the hands of a Worthington team. It was indeed Senior Night (finally, on the third try) celebrating the careers of senior Emily Dinan and Haley Gibson, both of whom were instrumental in the victory. Dinan got on base all 4 times scoring twice, and Gibby pitched a masterful complete game notching her 5th W on the year. Scioto jumped out to a big league early and coasted home scoring runs in the last 3 innings, and finally putting the game away in the bottom of the 6th winning by a final tally of 12-2.
After a quick 1-2-3 top of the 1st, Scioto got on the board in a big way in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of several Cardinal errors, batting around scoring 5 runs on 4 hits. Maddy Baughman led the way legging out an infield single, moved to second on an error and to third when Makayla Jauregui was hit by a pitch. Lauren Erickson drove in the first Irish run with a fielder’s choice grounder to short. Back to back singles by Dinan and Lucia Adams each drove in a run and Caroline Piatt cleared the bases with a big double to the left center gap.
The Irish got base runners on in both the 2nd and 3rd innings but could not push any runs across. In the bottom of the 4th they strung together several hits scoring 4 times. Madi Comstock singled to right and went to 3rd on a double to the fence by Jauregui. Erickson dropped a line drive in front of the left fielder plating Comstock. Sarah Booth hit a deep double to the gap scoring Jauregui and Erickson, and she scored when the Cardinal shortstop threw the ball over the first basemans’s head on a grounder by Dinan.
A pinch hitting Alexis Hoover singled to right center in the 5th and moved to third on a double over the drawn in outfield by Baughman. Erickson’s sharp single up the middle plated both runners. In the bottom of the 6th, Dinan drew a walk to lead off the inning. She moved to second on a ground out and smartly tagged up on a fly ball to center moving to third. Baughman’s third hit of the evening, a solid single to left ended the game driving in Dinan making the score 12-2.
Gibby took to the mound on Tuesday night and pitched a complete game masterpiece. She only allowed 2 runs and 4 hits and a walk, striking out 3 on the night. She only faced 4 batters over the minimum and threw a mere 59 pitches in her 6 innings of work.
The defense posted their best game of the year playing error free ball for the first time on the 2019 campaign. They turned a double play on a line drive to the outfield with Jauregui gunning down the Cardinal base runner who had strayed too far off second base. Piatt caught another would be base stealer, shooting her down 2-6.
Scioto has Wednesday off, before heading out on the road to take on the Wildcats of Hilliard Davidson Thursday evening. First pitch at 5:15.
