Scioto’s Season Ends in Tight Tournament Battle with Big Walnut

May 26, 20260

Big Walnut High School, Sunday May 24, 2026: What was supposed to be a Friday night tournament game turned into a Sunday morning showdown after rain forced a postponement—creating a strange, emotional final chapter for Scioto softball. Just hours after the last out, seniors Lyla Magnussen, Abbi Clark, and Maria Wasko would trade their uniforms for graduation gowns later that evening, adding even more weight to an already meaningful day.

And fittingly, the Irish battled until the very end.

Played on Big Walnut’s home field after the weather shift, the matchup felt every bit like a postseason game from the first pitch. Every at-bat mattered. Every baserunner felt important. And for much of the morning, neither team gave an inch.

Scioto struck first.

In the opening inning, Maria Wasko delivered an RBI single to give the Irish an early lead and inject energy into the dugout. But Big Walnut answered quickly with a run of its own, and from there the game settled into a tense, low-scoring duel.

At the plate, Scioto consistently competed. The Irish worked deep counts all game long, averaging nearly five pitches per at-bat while repeatedly fouling off tough pitches and refusing to give away outs. The quality of the at-bats was there throughout—even if the timely hits proved harder to find.

In the circle, Avery Reynolds once again gave Scioto every chance to win.

She attacked the strike zone from the start, opening 15 of 22 at-bats with a first-pitch strike while never issuing a leadoff walk. Efficient and composed, she threw just 79 pitches across six innings, allowing only three hits and no earned runs while keeping the Irish locked in a one-run game deep into the morning.

The deciding moment came in the sixth inning when Big Walnut broke the tie with a triple that finally created the separation the Eagles needed.

Scioto continued to battle until the final out with a leadoff hit by Abbi Clark, but couldn’t quite find the late breakthrough.

And just like that, the season ended with the Irish as runners up in the District Championship.

Still, this season was about far more than one final score. It was about long extra-inning battles, comeback wins, rivalry games, tournament runs, cold nights, a few warm spring evenings, and a team that kept fighting no matter the situation.

And on a personal note—thanks for following along with all of these recaps throughout this season (and all the seasons before that.) Writing them and reliving these moments each game has meant a lot, especially getting to watch this senior group finish their journey together.

Scioto’s season came to a close Sunday with a hard-fought 2–1 loss to Big Walnut, but the memories, and this group of seniors, won’t soon be forgotten.

And, as always, Go Irish!
