Big Walnut Noses Out Scioto in Hard-Fought Tourney Tilt

May 26, 20260

The rains came and went all weekend, see, knockin’ Friday night’s ballgame clean off the docket and pushin’ the district showdown clear to Sunday mornin’. So there they were, the Scioto Irish and the Big Walnut Eagles, squarin’ off under cloudy skies with graduation gowns waitin’ in the wings later that very evening for seniors Lyla Magnussen, Abbi Clark, and Maria Wasko.

And brother, this one had all the makings of a corker.

The Irish wasted no time puttin’ a run on the board in the first frame. Maria Wasko stepped in and laced a base knock that sent a runner scootin’ home, givin’ Scioto the early edge and bringin’ the faithful to life.

But the Eagles answered right back in the home half. Sarah Adams uncorked a ringing double to center, knotting the affair at one apiece, and from there the two hurlers locked horns in a genuine old-fashioned pitchers’ duel.

Now listen here, Avery Reynolds was dealin’.

The hard-throwin’ right-hander pounded the strike zone all afternoon, opening 15 of 22 hitters with strike one and refusin’ to hand out any free passes. Not a single leadoff walk. Not one. Just cool nerves and fastballs with purpose. She tossed only 79 pitches in six sturdy innings, surrendering a mere three safeties and not allowing an earned tally all day long.

And the Irish bats? Well, they battled, too.

Scioto’s hitters worked counts like seasoned veterans at the dish, averaging nearly five pitches per trip and fouling off offering after offering, makin’ Big Walnut’s pitcher earn every blessed out. Trouble was, the timely knocks simply wouldn’t fall.

Then came the sixth inning.

With the score still deadlocked, the Eagles finally cracked the code. A triple into the outfield grass plated the go-ahead run, and suddenly the Irish found themselves down to their final swings.

They fought to the bitter end, sure enough. But the rally never quite arrived.

And so, on a Sunday morning that began with tournament dreams and ended with graduation waiting just hours away, the curtain came down on Scioto’s season with a hard-luck 2-to-1 defeat at the hands of Big Walnut.

A tough finish, perhaps… but one mighty fine ballclub all the same.
