Late Surge by Hayes Overpowers Scioto in Nail-Biter

April 27, 20240

April 26, 2024 – Dublin Scioto High School:  In a tense pitcher’s duel that lasted six innings, the Irish fought hard against conference rivals Delaware Hayes at Scioto High on Friday.

The Irish finally put a run on the board in the third after Leah Matter singled, scoring one run.

Grace Singleton homered to left field on the sixth pitch of the at-bat, which helped the Pacers tie the game at one in the top of the fourth.

In a valiant effort to snag that homer out of the air, Gina Wasko crashed hard into the left field fence. She was attended to by the Athletic Trainers on-site and did not return to the game. Her family reported that she’s doing well, despite being a little bruised, and looks forward to seeing her teammates again.

It wasn’t until the top of the seventh that the undefeated Pacers broke up the tie when Kami Pelletier-Harris grounded out, scoring one run. Then a double by Singleton followed to extend the lead to 4-1.

And that was the final score.

Brownynn Leighty earned the win for Hayes. The starting pitcher surrendered five hits and one run (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out 14 and walking one.

Lexie Richie took the loss for Scioto. The starting pitcher went seven innings, surrendering four runs (two earned) on six hits, striking out five and walking one.

Matter led the Irish with one run batted in. She was 1-for-2 on the day. Lyla Magnussen went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Dublin in hits. Faith Kinzer stole two bases.

Laurel Day, McKenna Coleman, and Singleton each collected two hits for the Pacers. Singleton led Hayes with three runs batted in. The center fielder went 2-for-4 on the day.

The Irish will travel to Westerville South to play the Wildcats for their next game on Monday.

We hope to see you out there!

Go Irish!
