Late Run Lifts Big Walnut Past Scioto in Pitchers’ Duel

April 14, 20260

Big Walnut High School, April 13, 2026: A bright sun hung over Big Walnut High School on Monday, but a stiff wind blowing in from right field kept the ballpark playing big—the kind of conditions where every run feels earned and nothing comes easy.

It set the stage for another tight battle, and that’s exactly what unfolded.

From the first pitch, it was clear this would be decided in the circle.

Avery Reynolds and Big Walnut’s Sarah Adams traded control early, working quickly and keeping hitters off balance. Opportunities were scarce, and each at-bat carried a little extra weight as both teams searched for a breakthrough.

Big Walnut found it first in the fourth.

Madi Clever delivered a double that brought home the game’s opening run, giving the Eagles a slim edge in a game where even one run felt significant.

Scioto didn’t flinch.

The Irish kept grinding at the plate, and in the sixth inning, Lyla Magnussen stepped in for one of the most patient at-bats of the night. After battling through seven pitches, she lined a single to center field, tying the game and injecting life into the dugout.

With the score even and momentum hanging in the balance, it all came down to the late innings.

Reynolds continued to battle in the circle, limiting damage and keeping Scioto within reach. She worked through six strong innings, allowing just two runs—only one earned—while striking out six.

But in the bottom of the sixth, Big Walnut found its opening.

Kennedy Reed came through with a single that pushed across the go-ahead run, breaking the tie in what had been a razor-thin contest all evening. Adams shut the door from there, finishing a dominant performance with 13 strikeouts and no walks.

Scioto managed five hits on the night, with Magnussen driving in the lone run, but couldn’t find one more timely swing against a tough Eagles defense that played clean throughout.

In a game where every pitch mattered and every inch was contested, Scioto saw the lead slip away late in a 2–1 loss to Big Walnut.

Next up: Scioto returns home Wednesday to face Westerville North—another chance to bounce back, and another opportunity for fans to pack the stands and support the team.

Go Irish!
