Rainy Night Derails Scioto as Big Walnut Pulls Away

April 30, 20260

Dublin Scioto High School, April 29, 2026: A cool, breezy evening greeted fans at Scioto on Wednesday, but the energy in the stands made it feel anything but quiet. It was Middle School Night, and the ballpark was packed—young players lining the field before first pitch, then filling the stands to watch their future team take the field.

For a couple innings, it looked like they’d get a classic.

Then the rain came.

What started as a steady drizzle in the third quickly turned into a downpour that changed everything. Pitchers struggled to grip the ball, with new dry balls constantly being shuffled in from the dugouts after nearly every pitch. Control became unpredictable, and the game took on a different kind of rhythm—one dictated as much by the weather as the players.

Big Walnut was the first to capitalize.

In the fourth, patience at the plate and the slick conditions worked in their favor. A walk forced in a run, and a wild pitch added another as the Eagles took control in an inning where simply putting the ball in play—or letting the weather do the work—proved enough.

Despite the conditions, Avery Reynolds was still dominant in stretches. She powered through seven innings, striking out 17 and battling through the rain-soaked chaos that led to several unearned opportunities. At times, it felt like she was pitching two opponents—Big Walnut and the weather.

Scioto found moments offensively, with Yonit Rodriguez driving in two runs and contributions scattered throughout the lineup. Gina Wasko, Abbi Clark, Reynolds, Maria Wasko, Rodriguez, and Gigi Rodriguez each collected one hit for Dublin, But sustained rallies were hard to come by in the slick, unpredictable conditions.

Meanwhile, Big Walnut stayed disciplined, drawing walks and taking advantage of every opportunity presented. Combined with clean defense behind them, the Eagles were able to steadily build their lead as the rain continued to fall.

By the final innings, the rain began to ease, but the damage had been done.

On a night where the weather took center stage as much as the game itself, Scioto couldn’t quite overcome the conditions falling to Big Walnut 8–3.

Next up: The Irish head back on the road Thursday to face Westerville North, looking to bounce back (hopefully under clearer skies.)  We’ll see you out there in Westerville to cheer them on!
