Westerville Central High School, May 12, 2026: The sun finally cooperated Monday evening at Westerville Central, casting long shadows across the field and giving fans in the bleachers a little warmth — at least if they stayed in the sunlight. And plenty of Scioto fans made the trip, filling sections of the stands to support the Irish against one of the area’s toughest teams.
Westerville Central entered the night atop the Ohio Capital Conference at 9–1 and carrying a dominant 21–2 overall record, including 15 wins on its home field. The Warhawks had built a reputation as one of the conference’s measuring sticks — and the game quickly showed why.
Even so, Scioto battled them every step of the way.
The Warhawks grabbed an early lead in the first inning after an error allowed the game’s opening run to score. From there, the matchup settled into a tight contest built around pitching, defense, and limited opportunities.
In the circle, Avery Reynolds kept Scioto within striking distance all night. The right-hander worked through six innings, allowing just one earned run despite constant pressure from a disciplined Westerville Central lineup. Time after time, she worked out of trouble and kept the Irish from falling out of the game.
But against a team like Central, even small openings can become costly.
The Warhawks added to their lead in the third inning through a mix of aggressive baserunning, productive outs, and another defensive miscue that pushed the advantage further. Scioto continued to compete defensively and put balls in play, but couldn’t break through against Westerville Central pitcher Elliott Long, who controlled the game in the circle with 14 strikeouts. At one point, the Irish had the bases loaded and couldn’t bring anyone home. A total of 8 were left on base for the game.
Abbi Clark provided the spark offensively for the Irish, collecting two of Scioto’s four hits on the night and consistently putting pressure on the Warhawks defense.
Despite the final score, the Irish showed they could battle with one of the conference’s top teams — staying within reach deep into the game against a program that rarely gives opponents much room to breathe.
In the end, Westerville Central protected its home field and handed Scioto a 4–0 loss.
